A Place for Original Voices to Rise
Queen City Songwriters, Inc. (QCSI) was founded in 2024, born from a shared vision between musicians and community leaders in Spearfish, South Dakota. At its heart, QCSI is about more than just music—it’s about storytelling, connection, and creating a home for original voices to thrive.
In a world where the music industry often chases trends and algorithms, we believe in something simpler and deeper: that every song carries a story, and every story deserves to be heard. Our mission is to make Spearfish a beacon for original music in the Black Hills, a place where artists feel seen, heard, and supported.
The idea started around kitchen tables, in coffee shops, and at local shows—conversations about the need for a dedicated space where songwriters could grow, connect, and share their work with a community that values authenticity. Founders Heath Johnson and Jason Guthmiller, both musicians themselves, knew the challenges of pursuing original music in a small town. They also knew the incredible talent hiding in plain sight—artists who deserved an audience, and audiences who deserved the chance to experience something real.
QCSI’s flagship event, the Queen City Songwriters Invitational, was created as a platform to spotlight these voices. Held annually in Spearfish, it brings together songwriters from across the region and beyond, offering an intimate, listening-room environment where lyrics matter and stories come alive. But the Invitational is just the beginning. Year-round, QCSI hopes to eventually hosts songwriter rounds, workshops, and collaborative events, all designed to foster creativity, mentorship, and community.
We believe that when artists are supported, entire communities are enriched. That’s why QCSI is more than an organization—it’s a movement. Led by a passionate board of directors, we are committed to building a sustainable platform for songwriters and audiences alike. We’re creating opportunities for collaboration between artists, local businesses, and other nonprofits. We’re advocating for the value of original music in the cultural and economic fabric of our town.
Our work is about nurturing a thriving ecosystem for the arts in the Black Hills, one where the next generation of songwriters can find their voice and where music lovers can discover the transformative power of a well-crafted song.
Together, we’re writing the next chapter for music in Spearfish—one story, one song, and one community at a time.
